We seek to rediscover the art of the piano as the composer heard it on the instruments of the time;  to collect and study the instruments themselves, conserving many for history, and performing on many, so we might rediscover history’s magic.  We exhibit and curate instruments, tell the great stories of piano and society, and study the history of the piano, its technology and its builders.

Piano Technicians Guild Convention Tour of New Exhibit is hosted by

Period Piano Collection

The new exhibit highlights successive Steinway “parlor grands” in every design gestation from their earliest to their last iteration

The 7’2” Parlor Grand, later known as the model “C”, illustrates the historical narrative of Steinway history - and the corresponding development of the modern piano as seen through the eyes of this builder.

Steinway 7’2” to 7’5” “parlor grands” exhibited are from 1862, 1864, 1871, 1878, 1885, and 1892.  Two additional Steinway “Parlor Grands” are the earliest version of the model “B”, an 1865 “Theodore Steinweg Nachfolger” grand (shown above), and the earliest version of the model “A”, an 1885 in nearly complete original condition.

In addition, Steinway pianos from an earliest flat-strung “fancy” 1858 8’ grand, to the “double-iron” verticals, to the “Centennial” concert uprights, and a “small” square from 1856 to a sonorous late square with sostenuto.

Next to the 6’ Steinway A will be the earliest Chickering “Parlor Grand,”  the scale 93 from 1883 with cast iron in unusual places.

Other instruments included in the exhibit may include a powerful Mathushek Orchestral Square, an 1811 Broadwood 8’ grand, two extraordinary Erard concert grands, a Broadwood 1811 and Clementi 1930s square, and more.   Of 90 instruments in the collection, 1/3 will be exhibited.
